Conversion Formulas
Plan your homemade vanilla extract with one simple ratio. Weigh your beans rather than counting them, because bean sizes vary.
Beans needed (oz by weight) = liquid volume (US fl oz) ÷ 8
For metric batches: beans needed (oz by weight) = volume (mL) ÷ 236.588.
Two different ounces: “oz” for beans means weight; “fl oz” for extract means US liquid volume. All cups, pints, quarts and gallons below are US liquid measures. Allow extra space in the container for the beans.
Quick batch guide
| Extract batch volume | Vanilla beans by weight |
|---|---|
| 8 fl oz · 1 cup | 1 oz |
| 16 fl oz · 2 cups · 1 pint | 2 oz |
| 24 fl oz · 3 cups | 3 oz |
| 32 fl oz · 4 cups · 1 quart | 4 oz · ¼ lb |
| 64 fl oz · 2 quarts · ½ gallon | 8 oz · ½ lb |
| 128 fl oz · 4 quarts · 1 gallon | 16 oz · 1 lb |
| 750 mL · about 25.36 fl oz | About 3.17 oz |
| 1 liter · about 33.81 fl oz | About 4.23 oz |
| 15 liters · about 507.21 fl oz | About 63.40 oz · 3 lb 15.40 oz |
Metric bottles in US liquid measurements
750 milliliters
≈ 25.36 US fl oz
≈ 3.17 US cups
≈ 1.585 US pints
≈ 0.793 US quart
≈ 0.198 US gallon
Beans: 25.3605 ÷ 8 = approximately 3.17 oz by weight.
15 liters
≈ 507.21 US fl oz
≈ 63.40 US cups
≈ 31.70 US pints
≈ 15.85 US quarts
≈ 3.963 US gallons (just under 4 gallons)
Beans: 507.2103 ÷ 8 = approximately 63.40 oz by weight, or 3 lb 15.40 oz.
Metric conversions are rounded. Reference: 1 US fl oz = 29.5735295625 mL; 1 US cup = 8 fl oz; 1 US pint = 16 fl oz; 1 US quart = 32 fl oz; 1 US gallon = 128 fl oz. One pound of beans is 16 oz by weight.
